Classroom Circuits: Hands-On Electronics for Kids

Building simple circuits teaches problem-solving the same way model rockets do — step by step, with real failures that lead to real understanding. Here's a starter project I use with 4th–6th graders.

Kids building a simple LED circuit on a breadboard

Materials (per group of 3)

Steps

  1. Connect battery positive to one resistor leg.
  2. Other resistor leg to LED anode (long leg).
  3. LED cathode to battery negative.
  4. Watch it light — if not, flip the LED.

Safety note: Always check polarity before connecting power. No soldering needed for this first build.

Extension Challenge

Add a second LED in parallel. Discuss why brightness changes. Tie it to real systems like the power distribution in a Mars habitat.
